Faroe Knitting

the best place to buy Faroese wool!

The Killing

I have received a few letters this last week asking questions about the sweater with stars, Sarah Lund is wearing in the Danish TV-series Forbrydelsen/The Killing, which is now shown in the UK on BBC4.
This particular sweater is designed by Guðrun & Guðrun, and it’s based on the traditional Faroese sweater where the star, as in the other Nordic countries, is often used. Guðrun & Guðrun interpreted the traditional pattern and made it smart, super cool and up to date. When the TV-series was shown in Denmark, the traditional Faroese sweater was suddenly back in fashion, and we saw pictures of it everywhere.  Danish supermodel Helena Christensen was also spotted in it.

If you want to knit your own traditional sweater, this is what you need:
Sirri yarn 3-ply undyed White and Dark Brown,  approximately 400 grams. Needle size 8 mm.
Knit the sweater to fit very tight, since the Sirri wool will stretch when you wear it.

Here is a link to show The Star.

Article in The Guardian:
Sarah Lund’s Danish Jumper is the surprise star of BBC4’s The Killing.

Thank you so much for this post! Does the 400gm of Sirri include both main shade and contrast shade?

    • Hanne says:

I knitted one for my self a few years ago in size medium, and it weighs 360 grams all in all. For size small and medium i think you should have enough with 300 grams of the main colour and 100 grams of the contrast colour

Thank you, Hanne. My next question is: how much ease should I allow when knitting the sweater? Should I make it the same measurement as my bust? – or allow an inch or two? – or go the other way and give it negative ease? Thanks!

        • Hanne says:

          Negative ease :)
If you want it to be as tight as in the photo, be aware that it will grow when you use it. Knit it smaller than you would normaly do

    Hi
I have been trying to knit the sweater but the sleeves joining to the yoke puzzle me Could you help please?

    • Hanne says:

I am working on a pattern for a sweater with raglan, and the part where you join the body and sleeves should be the same.
I will send you a copy of the pattern, and you can be my tester :)

      • Monica Gomez says:

Thank you very much it will be great

      • Hi, I would be really grateful if you would send me a copy of the jumper pattern from The Killing, I absolutely love it and its killing me that I can’t find a pattern.
        Best wishes
        Lorraine

I do not have a pattern for the jumper in The Killing. Guðrun & Guðrun has sued companies that have made copies of the pattern, since it is their design, so I have no plans to do so.
But I’m almost done with a pattern on a jumper, which is in raglan and knitted bottom up, and I would be happy to send you a copy, if it would help.

          • Hanne says:

            Hi Trevor
Is your mother called Jan? She sent me an e-mail asking for a pattern for a man.

        • Janie says:

I would be very grateful if you could send me the raglan sweater pattern to base The Killing sweater on. I think the Sirri yarn look gorgeous.
          Thanks, Janiex

Hi – I would very much like to knit “The Killing sweater.” I can’t find anything like it on-line, much less a pattern I could translate! I would like the raglan version, if possible.

The Killing started here in California last week and I love it. But–you really have to pay attention and it is difficult to knit and watch! I want to be the first knitter I know to make the sweater. I live in Northern California and Southern California and it has been very cold all over this year.

Please let me know how and when I can purchase your pattern. Thank you very much. judyandjaynovak@gmail.com

    Hi Hanne,
I know you can’t send a pattern exactly like Guðrun & Guðrun’s but I notice in your answer to Lorraine that you have a similar pattern. Is there any way you could send it to me? I’d be really grateful! Sue (UK)

Hi Hanne, I ve just been reading the blog on THE jumper from The Killing (the best tv I’ve ever watched) Anyway like many others I would love to try knitting the jumper. I noticed that you have said to other bloggers about a raglan pattern you have created yourself and wondered if this is the same pattern as the purple jumper in freestuff? Also I am travelling to Denmark later in the week and wondered if sirri wool is stocked in Copenhagen or on the mainland anywhere? Kind regards Laura, England.

    • Hanne says:

Yes, the purple jumper in free stuff :)
I am sorry, I don’t know where to buy Sirri in denmark.

      • Laura Kenner says:

Hi Hanne, thanks for replying so quickly. I shall download the pattern and scour Copenhagen for sirri wool. If I can’t find it I shall order it by internet when I get home.
        Kind regards, Laura K

  6. Lorraine Bembridge says:

Hello Hanne, Would it be possible for you to email me the knitting pattern you have which is similar to the one in The Killing? I would be so grateful and do you know where to buy the yarn in England please?
    Thank you so much
    Lorraine
